The Case for Career & Technical Education Symposium

On Monday, April 23, 2018, Thomas Nelson Community College will present The Case for Career & Technical Education Symposium. The event will bring together employers, educators, government officials, and others concerned with ensuring a strong linkage between educational attainment and the economic needs of the Virginia Peninsula and greater Hampton Roads.
The Case for Career & Technical Education Symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m., at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Auditorium in Templin Hall on the Hampton Campus. The new location was announced due to popular demand.
Featured speakers include Senator Tim Kaine, Congressman Bobby Scott, Huntington Ingalls Industries President and CEO Mike Petters, NASA Principal Technologist John Vickers, and the notable Richmond-based author, philosopher, and motorcycle mechanic Matthew Crawford.
The symposium will explore the critical role of Career & Technical Education (CTE) in building a strong workforce and will make the case that CTE is particularly suitable for many young people as they transition from adolescence to adulthood.
The symposium highlights a panel of graduates from Thomas Nelson CTE programs who have gone on to substantial professional success. The panel features Nancy Holloway, Head, Fabrication Technology Development, NASA-Langley Research Center; Tim Adams, Operations Manager, Warwick Mechanical Service; Jonathan Romero, Instructor of Nursing, Hampton University; Sang Tran, President & CEO, Kokua Support Services Corporation; and Charles Southall, Vice President, Engineering and Design, Newport News Shipbuilding.
Greg McLeod, Thomas Nelson Provost and Interim Dean of Health Professions, will moderate the panel.
The program will conclude with an energetic three-way conversation between Dr. Jeffrey Smith, Superintendent, Hampton City Schools; Dr. Susan English, Thomas Nelson Vice President of Academic Affairs; and John Angle, Vice president & Project Executive, W. M. Jordan Company.
The discussion is focused on the future and how K-12 schools, Thomas Nelson, and industry partners can jointly move forward in creating a strong education career system that provides attractive opportunities for students and meets the critical needs of regional employers.
The Hampton Roads Community Foundation is the symposium’s presenting sponsor with additional support from Opportunity, Inc., the Peninsula Council for Workforce Development, and the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education.
