Hampton Virginia is one of the nation’s most affordable beach towns, according to a study of more than 200 localities.
That assessment is courtesy of SmartAsset, an online destination for consumer-focused financial information and advice.
The study looks at average home sale price, property taxes, average home size, and monthly housing costs.
This is the fifth year in a row that the city has made the list. This year, Hampton tied with Melbourne, Florida, for 12th place. In 2017, Hampton was 23rd. Hampton is the only Virginia city on the list.
Nationally, the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller US National Home Price Index, which tracks the purchase prices of single-family homes, reports that prices rose 19.2% between January 2021 and January 2022.
Hampton is home to three outstanding beaches. At Buckroe Park, a sheltered sandy beach borders the Chesapeake Bay. Grandview Nature Preserve offers Chesapeake Bay beachfront access as well as 475 acres of salt marsh, tidal creeks, and other habitats. The Preserve forms the northeast corner of the city of Hampton. Outlook Beach, Fort Monroe’s public beach, is open sunrise to sunset.
