Virginia Beach Public Library (VBPL) and the Virginia Beach Master Gardeners have partnered to create a “Seed Library” that is based in the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library, located at 4100 Virginia Beach Blvd.
The Seed Library, a custom-made cart stationed inside the Central Library, offers seasonal selections of vegetable, herb and flower seeds, updated monthly, for customers to take and grow at home.
The Seed Library debuted on Jan. 20, 2018 with a grand opening celebration that featured a variety of activities presented by the Master Gardeners and other community partners, including how to create gifts with herbs, canning, dehydrating, cooking, and soil testing.
More than 300 people attended the event and took home more than 400 seed packets to grow their own produce.
The goal behind the Seed Library is to provide resources for budding gardeners while also helping ensure that a diversity of plants grow in the community.
Seasonal selections of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds, updated monthly, will be available at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library whenever the building is open. Customers may take up to five seed packets per month, while supplies last.
The Virginia Beach Master Gardeners will be on hand at the Seed Library from 1 to 7 p.m. on the first Monday of each month, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the third Saturday of each month, to help customers with their gardening questions.
In addition, VBPL will host free gardening programs throughout the year; and the Master Gardeners have a variety of workshops and events at locations throughout the city. For more information about the seed library and the launch event, visit VBgov.com/library-grow.
